Subject: Liberation day in Guernsey

I heard your band playing on the North Beach today as I was down celebrating Liberation Day with some of my family. So I thought I would look on your web pages to see what other events you have for the 2009 calendar, only to find alas, nothing. Could this be a mistake?
I first enjoyed band music as a young child in north-east Cheshire at the Whit walks and other events. Now I am retired and still love it, as it reminds me of those days. We moved to Guernsey in 1973 and our two sons were both born here. Liberation Day always has a special place in my heart, because my father was a British Army soldier with Force 135. He was in the first boat that came ashore that day. My mother lived through the German occupation in Guernsey with her parents, her 2 sisters and 5 brothers. They all survived the hardships during that time like many other Guernsey folk. My parents were married in the Castel Church on 31st May 1946. Unfortunately after the war was over they had to return to England, my father returning to his job in a steelworks when he left the army. We now have 4 grandchildren aged from 3 months to 3+ years, who all live in Guernsey at the moment. I enjoy telling the two 3+ year olds about their great grandparents and the story of the liberation.
I enjoyed your selection of music, especially the finale with the helicopter fly past and the crew all waving to the crowds below. More for the 65th celebrations next year please.
Look forward to hearing you all play again, especially the parents and children I remember from my 17 years teaching at the Hautes Capelles Infant School.
Good luck.
Rosalind Mountford

Hello Rosalind

Thank you for your feedback, it really was a most excellent day out.
My apologies for the lack of events calendar, it was in the process of being updated. This has now been done and it is back in place on the website.
Incidentally, our next concert is this Sunday afternoon in Candie Gardens, so if you would like to come along we'll be playing there for an hour from 3pm (weather permitting).

Thanks again

Dear Jane
Thank you again for all your help in making our Saumarez Park Walled Kitchen Garden open day so successful.  All the pre-publicity that you and Wendy achieved was brilliant.
Michael Eades thanked the brass band but could you also thank them from me too.  I thanked Keith but could you also pass on my thanks to him too.
We received marvellous comments in our visitors’ book.  Shall I e-mail these to you?  Let me know.
I’m copying this to Peter Falla.  Thank you both for including us in your Floral Guernsey Summer Festival.

Subject: Can I join your band please?

Dear Mr. Applegate,

I am a French Horn player, aged 17, who has recently passed my ABRSM Grade 6 Exam and have been playing the French horn for nearly 8 years. Is it possible, please, that I could be considered for joining this band.

Yours sincerely

Matthieu Perry

Hello Matthieu

Thank you for your interest.

I have passed your e-mail on to Simon Applegate, but in case he is still away I thought I'd better contact you anyway.

Of course you are most welcome and we would be delighted for you to come and play with us. If you would like to come to a rehearsal on a Monday evening (except some Bank Holidays) at the KGV playing field club house after 7.30pm you can get a feel for what we're like and what we do.

While the brass band does not normally have French horns it does have a variety of other horns which I'm sure you would find very similar to play if you would like to try them, but if you want to rehearse with us on your own instrument that's fine too. We have quite a few spare instruments so if you would like to try something just turn up.

Many of our members also play with a number of other bands and sets, so if you want to keep your hand in with the French horn (sorry about the pun) the GCB is a great place to meet people.

If you don't have transport and would like a lift to rehearsal, let me know, and we'll get someone to pick you up.

Also, we are playing a free concert this Sunday afternoon in Candie Gardens at 3pm, weather permitting, so if you want to meet us there just come along. I'll be playing lead Solo Cornet so will be easy to spot.

Hope to see you soon,

Solo Cornet

Dear Brass Band.....

My name is Carla Haynes.......23 years ago my name was Carla Hakenson, and I was an exchange student in Guernsey from the States (New Mexico) in 1984-1985.  I played with your group for the year that I was in Guernsey....does anyone remember?  I played trumpet and cornet.......Bondie?..Loud?...Mucked about.........remember?
I was searching Guernsey online with my husband, and came across your web-site and got VERY excited!!
The year I played with your group was a fun one and you all impressed my 18 yr. old mind...ha ha!
I have photos of some of the concerts and trips (to Jersey) we did that year and look at them often.
Just wanted to post to see if anyone remembed me...I remember some names....Colin, Roger, Simon to name a few.
Thank you for a wonder opportunity and memories that I will never forget.
Thought I would let you know that after I came back to New Mexico after my year in Guernsey, I attended University and graduated with a Music Education Degree and have been a music teacher for 18 years now.....
isn't music wonderful?
Take Care, and keep up the great organization!
Musically yours,
Carla Hakenson (Haynes now...)

Hi Carla

Yes, several over the longer serving members remember you. I have circulated your E-mail and hopefully you will be hearing from them soon!

Subject: GUERNSEY CONCERT BRASS

Hi,

I've just come across your website and as I have 'connections' with Guernsey and come to the Island regularlyI thought I would contact you.

My wife's cousin moved to the island about 10 years ago and bought a property in St Martin's. We visit them as often as we can (we live in South West London) and this will now increase probably as a new (first)n baby in the family was born three days ago!

My own brass band connections are that I was a Salvationist 35 years ago and a former Bandmaster (at Harrow) and Songster Leader (at Marylebone & Watford) and S.A. composer (pieces for both band and choir). I am currently the Chairman of the Robert Simpson Society and as such was at the Royal Northern College of Music's Festival of Brass in Manchester in January where Simpson was a featured composer (this was in recognition of his death 10 years ago). Whilst doing my National Service I played Euphonium for three years with the R.A.O.C. staff band and then tuba for a short time with a group organised by Jim Stobart (who I met in the R.A.O.C. band) who went on to conduct the Locke Brass Consort.

Over the years I have conducted the Fulham Borough Band and the Yiewsley and West Drayton Band. I currently teach a music appreciation course on our local U3A.

I'm not anticipating being on the island again until around Christmas and I wonder if you rehearse then or whether you might have any engagements about then? One year when we were over for Christmas (alternate years) we heard the local S.A. band caroling in the High Street which brought back happy memories.

I look forward to hearing from you.

with best wishes,

Terry Hazell

Subject: MY MESSAGE OF A MINUTE AGO!

I've just read the information a bit more and see that Simon works in insurance. I retired from work three years ago after working in insurance for the last 35 years, for companies & brokers (Lloyds and non-Lloyds) ending up as the accountant for an insurance agency with 3 staff!

I see that Simon also lives in St Martins so we have things to talk about.

Hello Terry

Thank you for your interest. Yes, anytime you are over you are most welcome to join us.

Let us know when you have your dates fixed and we can sort something out for you. We have spare instruments so should be able to find you something to play on.

We generally have a busy December with gigs right up to Christmas Eve, you'll recognise the music! We then break till the New Year, recommencing rehearsals the Monday following. If you do manage to get over before then let us know or just turn up to a rehearsal at the King George V playing field club house 7.45pm most Mondays, except bank holidays or engagement clashes.

I'll pass on your mail to Simon and the rest of the committee, I'm sure they'll be very interested to meet you too.

Hopefully see you soon

Subject: Hello Simon

Dear Simon,

Firstly, I have to say that I was moved by your kind words re:  Geoff Bright and George Rodger.  I knew them both well having undertaken the Pupil's course at Kneller Hall in 1987 when they were both Student Bandmasters.  I sat next to George for the year on the 2nd bassoon stand.  He was a splendid player and I learnt a lot from him.  I did meet him on occasion along the way during my career and he always seemed in fine form.  Geoff Bright was ever the gentleman, I met him also on occasion throughout my career, lastly while he was BM of the Codstream Guards.

I remember you too!!  A big character with a great talent on trombone if i remember correctly.

I am still serving in the Army, albeit only until March 2008 when the end of my career finally arrives.  I play bassoon in the Band of the Army Air Corps, under the direction of Capt Kevin Roberts.  For my sins I have found my way into the brass band world and am resident Md in Swindon to Swindon Pegasus Brass Band.

All the best to you and your band.

Dear Simon Applegate

We both love your concert when we are on holiday every year and wondered if it was possible to make a request - All I Ask of You from Phantom of the Opera.  We have the CD which we play endlessly and it has got some lovely brass in it.

Best wishes

Dear Sharon

Re Request for bugler

Acting on behalf of Mrs Iris Giles, Mrs Gloria Cannon and Mr Kenneth Cannon, I write to thank you for acceding to sound The Last Post and Le Reveille following the committal of the cremated remains of Gordon Cannon, their late brother, at Le Foulon Vale Cemetery last Tuesday afternoon. They found the bugle call not only appropriate for a man who had served in the Royal Air Force but also deeply moving. Your playing added dignity and solemnity to an emotive occasion and brought the ceremony to a fitting conclusion.  Thank you.

Yours sincerely

Hi Simon,

As you probably know that I’ve been in communication with Bob Meldrum following the sad news about George Rodger....Bob directed me to your Band’s web site where I pass on my congratulations to you and your band’s successes!!! You seem a well organised and supported gang!!!!!

I have just taken over Directorship of the Essex Yeomanry Band from Jim Baines. We are based in Chelmsford...we are possibly the only military band in the country without a combatant roll but have a military rank structure and uniforms.

Sorry we’ve lost touch for so long despite you and I being such good mates particularly during the gruelling 3 years at Kneller Hall.

Would like to hear from you again mate.

Cheers

Danny Greer

Subject: Enquiry

Hi, I am newish to the area, and have been interested in playing for a few years, I would like to play the fluglehorn, but am told it is probably easier to learn cornet first. I'm 28, can read very basic notes very slowly, but have a good ear for music. I just wanted to enquire as to whether you supplied instruments to your new members, and whether I would be too old to join a youth band or come to any teaching sessions you might have? Thanks, Tammy

Hi Tammy

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I've been away for 2 weeks.

Yes, we do have a range of spare band instruments available for use, and no, you're never too old.

Within our band we have some very experienced musicians who would be able to help you out so no problems there either.

If you could come along to a rehearsal on any Monday evening from 7.30pm at the KGV playing field club house then you could meet the band, and I'm sure we could find you something to have a go with.

If you don't have transport let me know and I'm sure someone could give you a lift.
