Saddleworth 2006

Early on the morning of Thursday 8th of June, the intrepid members of

the Guernsey Concert Brass and their trusty band of supporters boarded the Red-Eye flight to Manchester.

They were to take part in the annual Whit marches and Friday contests. This would include 3 separate concerts, 7 contests, a visit to York, The Trafford Centre in Manchester and a Brighouse and Rastrick rehearsal, and a march covering the whole of Yorkshire and half of Lancashire.

In their time there they would exist entirely on a diet of Yorkshire Hot Pot and Bitter, (with a side order of Black Pudding for Breakfast) with mealtimes being a race against the Armargh Old Boys Band, The Bern Oberland Regional Champions, and a 250 strong rugby team for the last bridge roll! Dinner for 600 please!

Although the GCB were to come away empty handed from the contests this time, somewhat hampered by the extremely hot and humid conditions, on summing up their performance Musical Director Simon Applegate would simply say “Magnificent!”

Thank you to all who made this long weekend possible, especially Phil and Helen of Championship Brass for doing so much of the organising, the band members who have all put in so much hard work over the preceding months, the players who came and helped fill in the gaps, the supporters for raising funds and waving flags as applicable, and of course Simon without who’s vision and drive we would never had got there in the first place!
